Always remember…
2010 saw a lot of heartache for the LGBTQ community and our allies, but something thoroughly amazing came out of the string of teen suicides. Complete strangers reached out to youth all across America (and the world) with a message of not only hope but strength as well. Two years later, the It Gets Better campaign has amassed over 40,000 videos urging young people to hang in there because their lives will get better. They know and can speak from experience because they have been there and survived.
Celebrities, government officials, and average folk like you and me stood up to share love and fortitude with those struggling with bullies in their schools, communities, and homes. The campaign has reached such an expansive audience so I am certain I do not have to tell you all of this, but I did want to make sure everyone had a chance to see the special MTV and LOGO, with the help of co-founder Dan Savage, aired just this past Tuesday. The true life It Gets Better stories of three individuals were broadcast with the hopes that everyone could see there is more to life than high school or stubborn families trying to come to terms with their loved one’s sexuality. Your story does not have to end a midst the chaos of coming out and vying for acceptance. And believe me, no matter what you are going through, nothing will keep us from fighting for you.
There is an infinite amount of possibilities in our lives especially when we wake up, stand up, and resolve ourselves to refuse the game others try to play with us. We are living in a time when others are waking up themselves to see how ridiculous this world was led to become, and everyday more allies are stepping out from the silence to voice their support for equal rights. You are not alone, especially not with nearly 7 billion of us sharing this planet with you.
I do not care if I have never met you, I love you because you are my family. And from the bottom of my heart, that will never change.
Stay strong, loves (of all ages)!
